Who Owns Jaguar?

2023 Jaguar F-TYPE Interior

If you’re in the market for a new luxury SUV or sports sedan for your Thousand Oaks drives, it’s hard to go wrong with a Jaguar. In the brand’s 80-year-long history, they’ve become renowned for their high-end performance, luxe amenities, and dashing style. But, some Westlake Village drivers may be wondering, “Who makes Jaguar vehicles?” The brand’s ownership has changed much throughout the brand’s lifetime, but the current Jaguar brand is owned by Tata Motors, one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world. Learn everything you need to know about who owns Jaguar, the history behind the brand, and where Jaguar models are made with this guide from Rusnak Auto Group.

Jaguar History

To answer the question of “Who owns Jaguar?,” it’s important to go back in time to see how the brand has changed hands over the years. The company that later became known as Jaguar was started in 1922 in Blackpool, England, by William Lyons and William Walmsley and was initially called the Swallow Sidecar Company. The company was soon rebranded as SS Cars, and the first Jaguar appeared in their lineup in September 1935. This two-seater sports model was named the SS Jaguar 100 and became prolific enough to put the brand on a trajectory to the luxury automotive company we know today:

  1. In 1945, shareholders agreed that “Jaguar” was a more distinct name for the company and rebranded to become Jaguar Cars Limited.
  2. Over the years, Jaguar cemented itself with popular sports cars like the Jaguar XK 120 and the Jaguar XK 150, their fame rising with two international wins at the Le Mans 24 hours race in 1951 and 1953.
  3. In 1965, Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation, which later acquired Land Rover manufacturing. With more brands under their belt, the name of the parent company changed in 1968 to the British Leyland Motor Corporation.
  4. Due to financial difficulties, the British Leyland Motor Corporation was nationalized, leading Jaguar to become its own independent company once more in 1984.
  5. In 1989, automaker Ford made offers to the Jaguar shareholders. By 1999, Jaguar was under Ford leadership, along with other premier brands such as Aston Martin, Volvo, and Land Rover.
  6. Ford struggled to make a profit, which led to a bidding competition for the Jaguar brand. An automotive group based in India, Tata Motors, eventually won in 2008, and the brand has remained under Tata Motors ever since.

Tata Motors: The Parent Company of Jaguar

The parent company of both Jaguar and Land Rover, Tata Motors is an automotive company based in Mumbai, India, which is part of the larger Tata Group. Here’s some quick info about how Jaguar and Tata Motors came together to form the brand we know today:

  • Both Jaguar and Land Rover were purchased by Tata Motors, leading to a merging of the two brands into one company called Jaguar Land Rover Limited in 2013.
  • Though Tata Motors owns several other automotive ventures in India and abroad, the main research and design for new Jaguar vehicles is based in the United Kingdom.
  • In 2023, Tata Motors announced plans to build an electric car battery factory in the UK to better supply the future Jaguar and Land Rover all-electric models.

Who Designs and Makes Jaguar?

As mentioned, all of the Jaguar design and research is done in Coventry, England– only about two hours north of London! There are also development facilities in Warwickshire and at the University of Warwick, as well as a vehicle assembly plant in Birmingham, where most of the US-sold Jaguar models are manufactured. Here’s who else makes Jaguar across the world:

  • Birmingham, England: Jaguar XE, XF, and F-TYPE
  • Solihull, England: Jaguar F-PACE
  • Wolverhampton, England: Engine assembly plant
  • Graz, Austria: Jaguar E-PACE and I-PACE
  • Changshu, China: Jaguar XE and XF
  • Pune, India: Jaguar XF
