As you search for your next luxury model in Westlake Village, you may come across the famous brand with the four-ring logo, Audi. With a full lineup of premium sedans, SUVs, and performance models, Audi is renowned for its refined style and exceptional performance on the Pasadena roads. But what does “Audi” mean? And what does the logo mean? Learn everything you need to know about the history of Audi and the meaning behind the name and logo with the experts at Rusnak Auto Group.
The founder of Audi, August Horch, started his journey into the automotive industry in 1899 when he founded A. Horch & Cie. After several disagreements with his chief financial officer, Horch left the company to start again, this time naming his company August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH. Unfortunately, his previous company sued for the name, and Horch needed to come up with a unique name for his new company. It’s said that his son, who studied Latin, was the one who came up with the name “Audi.” Meaning “to listen,” Audi was of a similar translation to Horch’s name, as “Horch” was a German word for “hark” or “hear.”
Audi became an internationally recognized brand due to its winning streak in the Austrian Alpine Runs from 1911 to 1914. They were also the first German car manufacturer to produce a car, the Audi Type K, with left-hand drive. While Horch left the company after the First World War, Audi continued to catapult itself to fame to become the luxury, high-performance brand we know today.
The four-ringed logo is a signature of style wherever you roam in Thousand Oaks, but many wonder: What does the Audi logo mean? In 1932, Audi merged with three other car manufacturers: Horch, DKW, and Wanderer. These four companies made up the Auto Union AG, later known as Audi AG, and a logo was created with four rings to signify the unification of the four brands.
As with any car manufacturer, the history of Audi is filled with innovation and technological advances, such as the Audi quattro® all-wheel drive. At the time of the Audi quattro®’s introduction more than 35 years ago, it was the first permanent all-wheel drive system designed for passenger vehicles. In the time since, Audi has continued to expand its technological capabilities with:
