The Mercedes-Benz Three-Pointed Star History

The company that would become Mercedes-Benz was founded as Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) in 1890. Founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, DMG was founded to create small, high-speed engines that would revolutionize the automotive industry. Unfortunately, Gottlieb Daimler passed in 1900, leaving the young company in the capable hands of his sons, Paul and Adolf.

As the company continued its success in the industry, the Daimler brothers realized they had yet to create a trademark. Remembering their father’s dreams for the company, they returned to an old postcard their father had sent their mother, marking his residence with a distinct three-pointed star. The brothers submitted this star as the proposed trademark for DMG, and it was accepted by the board in 1909.

Later, after DMG had renamed themselves Mercedes, the company merged with their automotive rival Benz & Cie and blended the three-pointed star with the laurel wreath of the Benz company. Today, the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star lives on, with more than 100 years of history behind it.

The Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning

So, now that you know where the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star came from, what does it mean? Though it may have been a sentimental choice from the Daimler brothers in 1909, there was another Mercedes-Benz logo meaning that affected the board’s decision. Each of the three points was said to represent the company’s drive for universal motorization on land, sea, and air. At the time, Mercedes-Benz wasn’t just known for their automobiles – they also produced engines for submarines. Their goal was high-performance engines across the world for every mode of transportation.

What About the Mercedes-Benz AMG® Logo?

The three-pointed star may be the most recognizable Mercedes-Benz logo, but another logo within the brand offers even more history and detail: the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo. A subdivision of the Mercedes-Benz brand, Mercedes-AMG® is dedicated to creating some of the highest luxury performance models in the Westlake Village market, blending unparalleled power with exceptional sophistication. The Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo, in turn, represents a rich history of innovation:

  • The left half of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo depicts an apple tree alongside a river. This is part of the historic coat of arms of Afflaterbach, Germany, where the Mercedes-AMG® headquarters is located.
  • The right half of the Mercedes-Benz AMG® logo shows a cam, valve, and valve spring, three crucial engine components that lie at the heart of all Mercedes-AMG® engineering.
